New Dinner Menu – Small Plates

At the end of last week we launched our new dinner menu and err the snow came. Bit odd that part but it also brought the intended part too; even more tasty grub into the Canteen whilst mixing some really dirty burgers with some lighter eats and offering you more value (as part of this our 2 courses for £20 has gone down to 2 courses for £18 plus a free glass of wine).

Anyways, we wanted to introduce you to some of the new dishes, starting with our small plates. Whilst they are typically viewed as starters we’ve got no probs with you ordering a few to have as a main, to share with a mate and a drink or two or to order as sides to go with a bigger plate or, say, a burger.

Fish Tacos

Pictured below, these are already proving super popular; breaded white fish (Coley), avocado, shredded cabbage and a tasty crema. You get 3 in a serving for £6, click here to book in and try them out.

Fish Tacos

All Day Breakfast Scotch Egg

Our scotch is epic, we really do think it is one of the very best in London, and beyond, and given how often we sell out, you guys seem to agree. It’s a monster, it’s served warm and the egg is a bit runny – happy days. We serve it with English mustard.

Cauliflower Bites

We’re really into cauliflower at the moment and we wanted to find a fun way of getting it onto our small plate menu. We’re dipping them in a slightly spicy tempura batter and they taste good, with just a little background heat. You deffo don’t need to be vegetarian to enjoy them.

Ben’s Buffalo Wings

We’ve moved these from being a side dish, up into the small plate section as they were too good to hide away. There are lots of ways to do buffalo wings, ours are a little different, no doubt purists will be weeping but it’s all about the final flavour and we hope you like it. We’re serving the wings in bigger portions than most and brining before coating in a spicy rub and oven cooking them.

Crispy Mussels

We spotted these on a recent trip to France, in an awesome brasserie solely dedicated to Moules, and we thought they’d be a fun addition to our menu… dip them in our homemade tartare sauce.

So there we have it, the small plates. Let us know your thoughts via twitter @benscanteen, we’re already developing our next menu and would love some input from you. Also, we’ve really started getting into Instagram, it would be very cool if you added your images of our food, just add #benscanteenmenu to your pics. This way people can see your images as well as the ones we’ve uploaded.

First weekend of 2013

Happy New Year y’all! First up, we want to thank you all for supporting Ben’s Canteen last year, we genuinely appreciate it and you guys drive us on to try and get better and better. A special thank you to everyone who voted us to Best Local Restaurant in SW London & Surrey, we were absolutely thrilled to win that award.

As we said, we’re always trying to get better and that’s why amongst lots of other things we have,

We’ve got loads of plans for the coming year; look out for a new dinner menu, some exciting new wines, more cocktails, some amazing Bloody Mary’s, more funky interior design and we’ll also be working with our people to make things run smoother. As ever, we genuinely value your feedback, so do let us know what you like and don’t like (via Facebook or Twitter if you like).

Anyways, enough of that, it’s the weekend! Come and join us on St John’s Hill for brunch, dinner and drinks.

  • Brunch kicks off from 9am – it’s the busiest (and we believe) the best in SW London, join us for big breakfasts, sexy eggs, top notch tea and coffee, Bloody Marys (we also do Virgin ones for those of you doing a dryathon this January) and smoothies.
  • Dinner now starts at 5pm and on Fridays and Saturdays we keep our kitchen open later, meaning you can get a late bite, right up to 11pm.
  • Don’t forget if you do join us for an early dinner then you can pick up some January value in the shape of a free glass of wine and 2 courses for £20.
  • We don’t take bookings for weekend brunch as we get so busy, it’s the only way we can seat and serve more of you, but you can reserve a spot in the evening online or by calling us on 020 7228 3260.
  • On Sunday nights we offer the Sunday Night Saver – get one of the Top 10 Burgers in London with chips for a flat tenner (or any of our other burgers and sandwiches for the same price).
  • Finally, if you need to host a party (or small gathering) in 2013, then drop us a line, we’re super flexible and you can hire all or some of the Canteen – click here for more details.

Right, go have an awesome first weekend of the year and we hope to see you in the Canteen at some stage.

Wild Boar and Apple Sausage Sanger

Brewed Boy and Jimmy are good to you… not only do they bang out the best coffee in Battersea, and beyond, but they’re constantly evolving our Monday to Friday daytime menu. Today they’ve come up with a wild boar and apple sausage and sanger as well as a warm chocolate muffin, served with a scoop of Jude’s vanilla ice cream.

We’re super excited about this week because on Sunday, from 6pm, we’re running Sunday Pie Night with a selection of hand held pies and ones to go with mash and gravy. We should also have a pie flavour that’s exclusive to us at the Canteen (we’re trying samples tomorrow). Also at some stage this week we’ll be adding an Egg and Bacon brekkie pie to our daytime menu (this will go on to brunch too).

Don’t forget that tonight you can win a free meal for two via Twitter.

DippityBits @ Ben’s Canteen

Our friend Kate has started a dips company, DippityBits (you should follow her on Twitter).

On Saturday night she is bringing a batch of her new creations to the Canteen and giving them away for free, in return for your feedback. The current line up of dips is looking like,

- Roasted butternut with honey cashews
- Grilled baba ganoush with basil
- Hummus with a wasabi kick
- Garden peas and fresh mint
- Creamy artichoke hearts
- Chunky sun-dried tomatoes, coriander and chili

Sound tasty right?

If you want a bit of the backstory on DippityBits before Saturday night then here are some words from Kate…

“DippityBits is my little creation which was born out of absolute love for dips and being able to share these delicious treats with my family and friends. The inspiration for the ingredients has come from my foodie adventures around Europe and Australia.

Pre-dinner drinks, BBQ’s, summer picnics (generally any fun occasion) just wouldn’t be the same without your close friends and some DippityBits! Like cider in the common on a sunny day, it goes hand-in-hand.”

Coke Floats and Poached Eggs

So we launched a new small plates menu last night and given we sold out of every small plate one can only conclude that it was a pretty popular evolution to the food that we offer at Ben’s Canteen. However, we’re not stopping there with the new stuff, today we’re adding a retro option to our daytime menu – Coke Floats. There is also a chance that our World Cup Burger will make its debut tonight and that we’ll be trying out some new small plate options too.

Also, we’ve been doing an under the counter Poached Eggs offering for those who ask us in the daytime, from today we’re making it a bonafide daytime menu option, served on toast. In the coming weeks we’ll probably start doing Eggs Benedict/Royale but for now we’re keeping it simple, poached eggs on some lovely Flour Station bread.

Don’t forget that if you work for the NHS then we’ll knock 10% off your bill, just show us your card to get the discount.

NHS DiscountFinally, thanks to our friend Captain Intensity who came and did one of his guest cocktail nights behind the bar. He’ll be back next Wednesday, he does a mean Mojito, so put a date in the diary. Follow the intense one on Twitter, @danfrodo.
