First weekend of 2013

Happy New Year y’all! First up, we want to thank you all for supporting Ben’s Canteen last year, we genuinely appreciate it and you guys drive us on to try and get better and better. A special thank you to everyone who voted us to Best Local Restaurant in SW London & Surrey, we were absolutely thrilled to win that award.

As we said, we’re always trying to get better and that’s why amongst lots of other things we have,

We’ve got loads of plans for the coming year; look out for a new dinner menu, some exciting new wines, more cocktails, some amazing Bloody Mary’s, more funky interior design and we’ll also be working with our people to make things run smoother. As ever, we genuinely value your feedback, so do let us know what you like and don’t like (via Facebook or Twitter if you like).

Anyways, enough of that, it’s the weekend! Come and join us on St John’s Hill for brunch, dinner and drinks.

  • Brunch kicks off from 9am – it’s the busiest (and we believe) the best in SW London, join us for big breakfasts, sexy eggs, top notch tea and coffee, Bloody Marys (we also do Virgin ones for those of you doing a dryathon this January) and smoothies.
  • Dinner now starts at 5pm and on Fridays and Saturdays we keep our kitchen open later, meaning you can get a late bite, right up to 11pm.
  • Don’t forget if you do join us for an early dinner then you can pick up some January value in the shape of a free glass of wine and 2 courses for £20.
  • We don’t take bookings for weekend brunch as we get so busy, it’s the only way we can seat and serve more of you, but you can reserve a spot in the evening online or by calling us on 020 7228 3260.
  • On Sunday nights we offer the Sunday Night Saver – get one of the Top 10 Burgers in London with chips for a flat tenner (or any of our other burgers and sandwiches for the same price).
  • Finally, if you need to host a party (or small gathering) in 2013, then drop us a line, we’re super flexible and you can hire all or some of the Canteen – click here for more details.

Right, go have an awesome first weekend of the year and we hope to see you in the Canteen at some stage.

Post a pic and get a free drink

Here at the Canteen we’re loving how good the food is looking at the moment…. and that’s inspired us to run a little free drink promo.

If you tweet or post a picture of the food you’ve had at the Canteen to Facebook then we’ll give you a free glass of wine or a free pint the next time you come in.

Our Winter Menu

Well nobody can deny that it’s getting really rather cold now. With this in mind, and with the arrival of our new head chef @corkgourmetguy, it is time to start rolling out our Winter Menu.

Snow at CJ

We’re very excited about it as it takes us to our original intention of delivering a very British menu. As the cold continues to bite we’ll be adding some new dishes and changing things around based on your feedback (best to let us know via twitter, @benscanteen but feel free to drop a comment onto this blog post or on Facebook) but for now you can enjoy Braised Ox Cheek Slider with Bone Marrow Mayo, Deep Fried Pigs Cheeks with Homemade Salad Cream, Cod Cheeks with Parsley Pesto, Potted Ham with Homemade Piccalilli, a wonderful British Meat Plate, Venison and Ale Pie, Oxtail and Horseradish Pearl Barley Risotto and lots more (see below).

Shortly, we’ll be rolling out a beer matching list too, working with London based brewers – it’s going to be great.

140 St John’s Hill for Ben’s Canteen

And so on Thursday, 14th July 2011, a little more than a year after deciding to embark on the path (one that turned out to be remarkably long, fun and frequently challenging) of opening a restaurant we got the news that we’d been waiting for from the legal boys,

Ben's Canteen confirmationSo it’s with great pride that we get to start the Ben’s Canteen project on 140 St John’s Hill, SW11 1SL (just a short stroll from Clapham Junction).

The night we got the keys

Once we received the news we raced over to get the keys and got some signage up.

Ben's Canteen, Coming Soon

The site previously belonged to Out of the Blue Bar and Kitchen and we think they did a fantastic job in creating a popular destination with a lovely, friendly and relaxed atmosphere. Our job is to build on this and we’ve got lots of exciting ideas both with regards to the food and drink. We’re seeking to work with a number of local producers and suppliers and we’re really excited about bringing their tasty produce to St John’s Hill.

As a start up restaurant we’ll be a work in progress so you’ll get to see our plans slowly roll out and we really want your feedback to let us know how we’re getting on and of course if there is anything you would love to see us try and do. Our aim is simple; to be a brilliant neighbourhood restaurant serving great food and drink and we can’t wait to get started – look out for a soft opening in August!

In the meantime you can follow our progress here on this blog, on our Twitter account and also on Facebook.
