New Dinner Menu at Ben’s Canteen

Recently we launched our best ever brunch menu, a cracking new cocktail menu and now we’ve rolled out a new dinner menu and we’re super excited about it, as not only is it superb but it also really fits what the Canteen is all about; fun, relaxed and a bit different.

The menu is pretty much split into 2 main parts: Small Plates and Big Juicy Burgers.

The Small Plates is the new element that we’re especially pleased with. At the moment we’re really into trying lots of different dishes and setting off multiple flavour bombs in our mouths – the Small Plates really helps that. It’s also a really sociable way to eat, and that’s something we love at Ben’s Canteen, groups of mates having fun.

Here are a few of our new Small Plates,

  • Fish Tacos with Smashed Avocado and Salsa – with a little squeeze of lime, too good. Our most popular Small Plate.
  • Braised Lamb Flatbread with Harissa and Greek Yoghurt – as soon as you finish this one, you think about ordering another (pictured below).
  • Heritage Tomato Salad with Rosary Goats Cheese – spot on for the summer.
  • Pork and Fennel Meatballs – warning, these are seriously addictive!
  • Butcher’s Board – a perfect sized charcuterie board with pickles and toast.

Braised Lamb Flatbread

We see Small Plates as being perfect for you and a friend to catch up after work and we’ve introduced a little promo called The After Worker where you can get any 2 Small Plates and a Carafe of Wine for just £18 – that’s less than a tenner each for a cracking catch up session.

The Big Juicy Burger element builds on our reputation of having one of the best burgers in town, the BC Burger. However, we’ve now massively improved our offering and we genuinely feel like we have amazing burgers across the board,

  • Crunchy Chicken Burger – it’s posh fried chicken and it’s super tasty. We brine it in buttermilk and then add bacon and slaw, too good.
  • The Wandsworth Food Bank Burger – a lamb & coriander burger with pickled ginger and cucumber and wasbi mayo. For years we’ve been subjected to lamb burgers being cooked to an inch of their life and normally just topped with tzatziki but our lamb burger is super juicy and a million miles away from our old disappointing memories. Also, 50p from each one sold will be donate to the Wandsworth Food Bank.
  • Veggie Burger – we’ve done the mushroom burger thing to death, so we wanted to create something more interesting and we feel we’ve done exactly that with our fennel, courgette and butter bean patty to which we add pickled red onions and salsa verde. We think we might even convert some meat eaters.
  • Ben’s Pulled Pork Bap – we love pulled pork, it has to be good for the soul. However, we’ve probably never got it quite right at the Canteen, until now! Now, it’s a thing of (messy) beauty and we seriously recommend it.
  • The Sea Dog is basically a jumbo homemade fish finger, served with homemade tartare sauce and what we’re calling mustard peas which is kind of like mushy peas but with a bit more of a kick.
  • Obviously we’ve kept the BC Burger, it’s so popular, but it too has had an upgrade. We used to top it with home brined topside of beef but we’ve switched to salt beef as it gives even more flavour.
  • We also couldn’t resist bringing in a monster of a burger – The Salad Dodger. It’s two beef patties with bacon and double cheese. Really, it’s for those who love meat sweats (warning, the picture below probably doesn’t quite do it justice, it is a biggie).

All of burgers now come on their own, meaning you can choose which sides you wish to add and/or share with your friends. Don’t forget, The Evening Standard reckon we do the best sweet potato chips in town.

As well as Small Plates and Big Juicy Burgers we do have some more straightforward Bigger Plates with a lovely Rump Steak, Two Salads and Grilled Fish with Fennel, Lemon and Salsa Verde and of course Desserts – the Passion Fruit Cheesecake is lovely with the Ice Cream Sundae and the Brownie being wonderfully indulgent.

New Dinner Menu at Ben’s Canteen

If you’ve been into the Canteen, during the day, recently you may have spotted Ben tucking into plate after plate of food (not that unusual some might say!). He undertook this arduous task so that you guys could enjoy a brand new dinner menu and it launches tonight.

As it’s January and the economy is a stagnant beast we’ve worked hard to try and reduce the overall cost of dinner and we’ve also changed our 2 courses for £20 offer to 2 courses for £18 and a free glass of wine.

Small Plates

The Fish Tacos rock and the All Day Breakfast Scotch Egg remains totally epic.

Bigger Plates

The Benny Benny Chicken is for those of you looking to be a wee bit healthier, it’s carb free and our rainbow slaw isn’t made with mayo which is much nicer and kinder on the scales. On the flipside, the blue cheese hollandaise with our new flat iron steak (a super tasty cut of beef) is luxurious and a decadent treat.

Burgers & Sandwiches

The BC Burger (recently named as one of the UK’s top burgers by ShortList) is untouched (although we did recently improve it by switching bun, it’s way better) but we’ve added a couple of new, frankly dirty, burgers too. Come and check out the Sloppy Ben (basically we pour on chilli con carne and cheese) and the Big Benny Melt (the burger is topped with mac & cheese) and indulge in good filth – feel free to ask for additional napkins.

We’re super excited about the new Sea Dog (basically a posh fish finger sandwich loaded with mushy peas and homemade tartare sauce) and our All Beef Hot Dog is a winner, especially if you add chilli and cheese!

Salads

We’re loving the Mackerel Nicoise – great fish and a great salad.

Sharers & Sides

We’ve made our Mac & Cheese vegetarian friendly and we’ve introduced two new veggie sides in the form of Spicy Sweet Corn and Smokey Roasted Cauliflower (delish).

Desserts

Just before Christmas, Ben took a trip to Lille and Bruges and fell in love with Speculoos which is kinda like a ginger biscuit but a bit more cinnamony – this is good news as we now have a Speculoos Cheesecake on the menu and it’s lovely. For desserts we’ve sourced the best salted caramel ice cream we could find, it’s from our friends at Gelupo (the best ice cream place in town, go check it out on Archer Street in Soho).

Canteens are for friends

Ben's Canteen

When we set up the Canteen we always had a few core principles in mind,

  • It should be super tasty
  • We’ll use produce that you may otherwise have to journey into ‘town’ to have
  • It should be relaxed
  • It will be open all day
  • We’ll serve seasonal British food

And then there was one thing that we really wanted to capture – making it a great place to catch up with friends, whether it be just a couple of you or a big group to share good times with. Staying in contact via Facebook, text messages and Twitter is great but nowhere near as good as meeting up in person – our job is simply to try and make that more fun.

We love the Canteen’s big windows at the front, so we’ve put in large tables which can be shared with other ‘Canteeners’ or taken over by groups of friends whilst (hopefully) basking in the sunshine. In the ‘dining room’ (in essence we’re never that formal, you’re more than welcome just to have a drink there) at the back we’ve created a more intimate area which at night is softly lit.

When it comes to the breakfast, lunch, brunch and dinner menus we hope we’ve put together a list of choices that helps to get you guys talking, whether it be our infamous All Day Breakfast Scotch Egg, our #doublebeef burger, our new desserts (e.g. a Rolo tart – who would you give your last one to?!) or our top notch Full English that comes with homemade beans – we’re always evolving and we like to do things a little differently, please do feel free to give us feedback on our creations.

We offer 2 courses for £10 and it’s ‘top British nosh’ as many of our customers like to say. Breakfast Meetings

As we run SW London’s biggest and busiest brunch you can rely on us to knock up a cracking breakfast – in our experience a good breakfast meeting has always laid the foundations for exciting future projects. We offer our Big Ben (Full English) alongside Eggs Benedict, Royale and so on… we also do epic breakfast baps. Of course a good breakfast meeting needs killer coffee and tea, we have Square Mile and Teapigs, and lots of juice and if you’re feeling a bit more daring then maybe even a Bloody Mary or a glass of Prosecco.

Bespoke Events

We love to tailor events to your needs at the Canteen. So if you wanted to say host a drinks reception with canapes then we can do that without any problems (click here to see our canape options) or you might want us to open earlier for a large breakfast meeting –  just let us know what you think will make your business event go well and we’ll try to make it happen.

Dinner

British food, done well is what we serve and we know it will leave you and your clients happy. What business dinner wouldn’t go well when you start with our All Day Breakfast Scotch Egg, a British Meat Plate and Potted Hams before moving on to our British Beef Board, Pollock with Cockles, Oxtail and Horseradish Risotto or Venison before finishing with desserts such as a Powerhouse Porter Cheesecake or a British Cheeseboard?!

We’ve got free WiFi and you can always borrow our printer or photocopier for those emergency moments! Also, whilst you’re waiting for your clients and colleagues you can grab one of the magazines in our rack for a read and to be inspired.

Tackle our World Cup Burger and Small Plates

Ok so another busy day at the Canteen… we’ve finally assembled our World Cup Burger and it’s pretty damned mighty. We’ve sourced excellent beef patties from Dove, the Butcher on Northcote Road, and slammed two into a Flour Station bap. Then we picked on some smoked Montgomery Cheddar from Hamish Johnston (this is a total revelation to us at the Canteen, why did we not discover this cheese before?!). Finally we mixed ketchup and mustard and mounted the patties on top and then added gherkins – tackle that people!

Sticking with the rugby for the moment… if England beat Argentina then we will give you a free Bloody Mary (if you have post match brunch).

Last night our Small Plates menu made it’s debut and we have to say it was a big success, we sold out of every plate. The Labne (Lebanese Cheese Balls) got a lot of praise as did the Butternut Squash Bites.

We’ve got a seriously retro option on the desserts menu, a scoop of Jude’s Vanilla Ice Cream with Coca Cola (Coke Floats) – it’s a toss up between that and our new Plum Crumble tonight we think.

In other news, we’ve extended our 10% Pedal Power discount, previously it was only open to those cycling to the Canteen before 5pm, Mon-Fri, now it’s applicable day and night. We’ve also introduced a 10% discount if you work for the NHS. Both of these discounts apply to food and drink.

Tuesday Dinner and Tapas Preview

Before we get onto tonight’s dinner (which features a new dish) we just wanted to confirm the rumours that Brewed Boy will be manning the contact grill tomorrow night and serving up some tasty tapas. Look out for grilled chorizo and manchego, black pudding and quail’s egg, aubergine caponata with goat’s cheese on toast and a herb tortilla. We’ll also be serving Mrs King’s pork pies and scotch eggs alongside a full dinner menu.

As for tonight, we’re trying out linguine with fire roasted peppers, vine tomatoes and basil. By the way, we had a couple of young ladies try our hake dish last night and they gave it a 100% satisfaction rating. Will you agree with them?
