This week at Ben’s Canteen

Rumour has it that it’s Spring and that the terminally dull cold is finally on it’s way out. That’s exciting. To add to the excitement, we’ve got a bunch of things going on at the Canteen this week and coming up in March.

This Week

Coming Up

  • Apres Ski Party. Ben’s Canteen is becoming Ben’s Chalet for night only.
  • St Patrick’s Day: Bring your own Guinness.
  • Will Yates is bringing his award winning chilli back to the Canteen – do not miss our Chilli Night.
  • Look out for some Easter specials, details coming soon but pulled lamb shoulder and deep fried creme eggs might be in the mix.

Ben's Canteen

This weekend at Ben’s Canteen

Oh hello it’s a rugby weekend and in our part of London, that’s a very big deal. Build up for the opening weekend of the Six Nations with  brunch and Bloody Marys. We’ve teamed up with Sipsmith to bring you their take on a Classic Bloody Mary,

Bloody Mary

and Tiff, our superstar behind the bar, has also made a Brunch Thyme Mary (a Bloody Mary using lemon thyme and rosemary infused vodka) and a Bloody Good Kick (chilli and garlic infused vodka), which is quite an apt name for this weekend eh.

We’ve also recently added a Marmalade Martini, a range of Hot Chocolates (Mint, Chilli, Gingerbread or with Amaretto) and we’ve got all new smoothies; Strawberry Delight, Blueberry Bliss and Pineapple Surprise – we now only use a little yoghurt, making them even healthier – to set you up for a big weekend.

Also, this weekend,

  • We have a new dinner menu! It’s full of dirty burgers (e.g. the Big Benny Melt – a burger topped with mac and cheese) and hot dogs but we’ve also added in some lighter options such as the Benny Benny Chicken which is a chicken breast with salad and a mayo free slaw, and a Mackerel Nicoise to balance things out.
  • Dinner now starts early, join us from 5pm and on Fridays and Saturdays the kitchen is open until 11pm, meaning you can join us for late night bites.
  • Book in for an early dinner, from 5-7pm and we’ll give you some  extra value in the shape of a free glass of wine and 2 courses for £18.
  • You can book a table online or by calling us on 020 7228 3260.
  • We’re proud to run SW London’s busiest (and we like to think), best brunch - join us every weekend from 9am-4pm. We don’t take bookings for weekend brunch but tables do become available quickly, grab a coffee and/or a bloody mary at the bar whilst you wait.
  • Make your weekend last longer by joining us for the Sunday Night Saver - all burgers and sandwiches for a flat tenner, that’ll help banish the Sunday night blues.

Dates for your February Diary

The schlep that is January is almost over and whilst some of that debt mountain you doubtless piled up during December will probably remain, life is going to get better and the days a little lighter.

To help make your February even brighter we’ve got some fun events coming up (plus there are some more in the pipeline so keep your eyes peeled).

4th Feb – Crafty Pint

Crafty Pint run super cool craft workshops in pubs over drinks. We loved the idea so much that we asked them to do a monthly workshop here at the Canteen. Join us on the 4th for ‘Love Token’ making – click here for more info and booking details.

6th Feb – Waitangi Day

If you’ve spent much time at the Canteen then you’ve probably realised that we’re very Kiwi heavy on the staff front (and what a lovely bunch they are too). Anyways, this means we are very much celebrating Waitangi Day on the 6th Feb. Come hang out with us and munch Kiwi Burgers, Lolly Cake, Fish & Chips and Mince and Cheese Pies.

13th Feb – Chinese New Year

This isn’t a true Chinese feast, it’s a homage to some of the founders of gourmet street food, Mission Street Food – who eventually set up a restaurant inside a Chinese restaurant (there’s the link!).

Join us for deep fried pork belly tacos, a coffee and cigarette burger, chocolate bar terrine and plenty more! It’s gonna be a food sensory overload, more info and ticket booking here.

14th Feb – Valentine’s Singles Party

This Valentine’s we’re championing the singles! Join us for cocktail making and dinner. 25 girls and 25 boys. Book your tickets here.

24th Feb – Chilli Night

On the 24th, Billy Franks is bringing his Burn The Other Cheek chilli to Ben’s Canteen for one night only. A mix of rare breed beef, pork and venison, it’s extraordinary stuff. Make sure you don’t miss it, served from 5pm, click here for more details.

Canteen Weekender

It’s been a week for high fiving in the Canteen as on Monday we got the exciting news that we had been voted as Best Local Restaurant in the Time & Leisure Food and Drink Awards – good times! It’s great to be recognised for the hard work that has gone in but really it’s the people, i.e. you our lovely customers, who make the Canteen what it is and give us the drive to get better. There are loads of developments in the pipeline and we can’t wait to roll them out (will sadly take a while though but good things come to those who wait and all that).

Below is a little list of what’s going down over the weekend and coming up…

  • Dinner starts at 6pm and if you book in before 7pm then you can claim 2 courses for £20 and a free glass of wine.
  • We also have another little offer for you; we recently launched the Sunday Night Saver - get any of our burgers or sandwiches for a tenner.
  • When you pop in during the evening, you need to indulge in our dedicated chip menu - the chilli cheese chips are the staff favourite.
  • Happy Hour - join us for good times and cheaper drinkies from 5-7pm daily.
  • Yikes, it’s time to think about booking your Christmas party. We’ve just launched our Christmas menus, click here to check them out. We’re doing a set Christmas Lunch menu for £15 per person.
  • We run SW London’s busiest and best brunch, starting at 9am each day.
  • Come and check out the new brunch menu, we’ve added French Toast, Huveos Rancheros and a Smoked Salmon Bagel amongst other things.
  • Reckon you’re a bit crafty? You should come to the Crafty Pint workshop on the 8th October – design and keep your own Tote bag.
  • On the crafty front, check out the Colporter pop-up - leave the Canteen with a full tum and some awesome pieces for your home.
  • Oh, you should also check out our new bar snack, beef jerky from Billy Franks. The cheeseburger flavour is awesome as is the BBQ and the Holy Fuck Sauce (from The Rib Man) flavour.

Canteen Weekender

We bloody luv the weekend! Come and chill on the Hill with us to find out why – although we can’t promise it will be as lively as last Sunday – the St John’s Hill Festival was brilliant and it was great to see the street buzzing with so many people. We’d love if it inspired more people to set up shop here (by the way we think the new Thai place opens this weekend, a very welcome addition to the Hill).

In other good news, this Saturday we are NOT closed for a private party, so come and join us for dinner from 6pm.

Crafty Pint at Ben’s Canteen

We’re super excited to announce a partnership with Crafty Pint – workshops from a collective of creatives and designer-makers living and working around Tooting who operate under the banner of Handmade in Tooting, find out more about them by clicking here. They normally do Crafty Pint events at the Tooting Tram & Social but this their first foray into Battersea and we’re delighted it’s with us.

On the 8th October, from 7pm, we’ll be hosting a Crafty Pint session where attendees will be designing their own Tote bag (which you get to keep).

Crafty PintThis workshop is suitable for beginners, no experience is needed. All inks are washable and non-toxic, but do bring a pinny in case of inky stains.  The inks are fixed by ironing, so your finished tote bag can be used and washed. That’s if  you don’t plan to frame your work of art!

If you want to get involved then click here for full details (including a video of one of the workshops so you can see what it’s like) and to reserve a spot.
