Bank Holiday Weekend and a Shiny New Bar

There’s a buzz in the air at the Canteen, it’s a bank holiday weekend coming up and that means some serious indulging, be it a lazy brunch pepped up with Bloody Marys or dirty burgers, beers and cocktails at night.

It also sees us draw ever closer to building our shiny new bar. It’s going to look cool and pretty but it’s also being designed to try and help us serve you drinks more quickly – never a bad thing eh.

We’re going to be closed for a short period whilst we do this work. Now obviously we’ll be open all of the bank holiday weekend, from 9am till late, but we’ll be closing up on 5pm on the Monday and then won’t re-open until 9am Friday the 31st. At which point you should definitely head in to christen the new bar in a flurry of drinks and instagram action.

Bank holiday and a new bar; good times.

Ben's Canteen

Now that is a tasty burger…

Whilst the daytimes at Ben’s Canteen are all about treating yourself to an indulgent brunch (if you’re working from home or are lucky enough to have a day off then we certainly suggests some eggs, Allpress coffee and just maybe a cheeky Bloody Mary), night times are all about dirty burgers.

All of our burgers are handmade on site, using a house mix to make a serious beef patty, homemade burger sauce and a glazed ‘American’ bun.

BC Burger

In the case of the original BC Burger, we brine topside of beef for 24 hrs before slow cooking it for 8 hrs. This is then sliced to order, topped with smoked cheddar and placed on top of the beef patty – it’s epic and has seen MSN Food name us as one of the Top 21 Burger Places in the UK, Scout Magazine rate it as one of the top 10 in London and ShortList view it as one of the UK’s best.

We also have the Big Benny Melt, which is a burger topped with Mac & Cheese and the Sloppy Ben, a burger topped with Chilli Con Carne and a slice of rather retro American cheese.

If these burgers aren’t doing it for you then you can always tuck into the Sea Dog which is basically a jumbo posh fish finger roll, the BC Chicken Burger, a Pulled Pork Bap with Deep Fried Pickles or a veggie friendly Mushroom & Peach Burger.

To go with a dirty burger we suggest you get stuck into a cocktail (we’re thinking an Old Fashioned) or take down a Boilermaker (a shot of Maker’s Mark followed by a more leisurely pint of Meantime Pale Ale). We’ve also got the brilliant Meantime London Lager on tap as well as beers from the local brewery, Sambrook’s. Or a fun wine list that offers plenty of value and some very drinkable reds to wash down all that beefy goodness.

Now, go round up some mates, and come hang out with us on St John’s Hill.

Bank Holiday Weekend at Ben’s Canteen

Long weekends are designed for one big chill out session and we’d like to think that Ben’s Canteen is here to help you chill even more.

We’re open everyday from 9am for indulgent brunches and a range of brunch drinkies: awesome Bloody Mary’s, Aperol Spritzs and, Ben’s favourite brunch time tipple, Marmalade Martinis.

bloody mary

And then from 5pm each night we’ll be serving up dirty burgers and other bites alongside cocktails, beers and wine.

Also, this Bank Holiday, we’re delighted to be hosting a Sunday night pop-up from the brilliant Well Kneaded. It’s a food truck, started by a couple of local ladies, who serve amazing Firebread from their wood fired oven (in the wagon). The pop-up starts from 5pm, click here for more details and to check out the menu.

Weekend Booze & Bites

This week has been a busy one at the Canteen, we agreed a tie up with the Wandsworth Foodbank (click here for details) and we released a little film our friend made to show off the Canteen and St John’s Hill at night.

Ben’s Canteen – The Place on the Hill from Ben’s Canteen on Vimeo.

We also released details of our £15 menu for The Fabulous Feast, a week long food and drink festival on St John’s Hill (Battersea’s best street).

Anyways, on to the weekend! Come try our new Spring Brunch. We’ve added smashed avocado on toast with a poached egg (and we seriously recommend adding spicy chorizo to this magic combo), mushrooms on toast with truffle oil and a fried egg and a pair of new salads. Hit up the Canteen this weekend, give them a whirl and let us know what you think by clicking here. Don’t forget if you Instagram them then you can score yourself a free Bloody Mary.

Talking of Blood Mary’s we’ve made a video of our Sipsmith Classic Bloody Mary - click here to learn how we make it. We’ve also added a couple of new drinks, inject some Italian style into brunch with an Aperol Spritz or force yourself back into the game with our Hair of the Dog.

Smashed Avocado & Poached Egg with Spicy Chorizo

Of course, the weekend isn’t just about brunch…

  • Get involved with our cocktails. A pre or post dinner Old Fashioned always sounds good to us whilst the girls at the Canteen love the Damson in Distress (Damson Vodka, Prosecco & Cranberry) and the Vanilla & Chilli Caprioska is a firm staff favourite.
  • Our range of dirty burgers are proving so popular that MSN Food recently named us as one of the Top 21 Burger places in the UK. We don’t just do burgers though, we’ve got some lighter bites such as a Mackerel Nicoise salad and the Benny Benny Chicken which is a carb free number.
  • Dinner now starts early, join us from 5pm and on Fridays and Saturdays the kitchen is open until 11pm, meaning you can join us for late night bites.
  • Book in for an early dinner, from 5-7pm and we’ll give you some  extra value in the shape of a free glass of wine and 2 courses for £18.
  • And check out our new wine list, which includes some left field (but awesome) choices such as Portuguese, Croatian and Lebanese wine, and a seriously top notch Greek wine (Hedgehog) which is like a Barolo, alongside the more expected.
  • Make your weekend last longer by joining us for the Sunday Night Saver - all burgers and sandwiches for a flat tenner, that’ll help banish the Sunday night blues.
  • Also, if you Instagram your food, or drink, at the Canteen then you can get a free dessert or Bloody Mary, click here for details.

Big eats at Ben’s Canteen

If you’ve got a hunger then come see us at the Canteen.

Tonight (Weds) it’s Ribs Night. We’ve got a whole rack of baby back ribs waiting for you – served with hand cut chips and slaw. We’re also doing some specials; nachos with pulled pork or chilli and a deep fried banana split with homemade peanut butter ice cream.

Then on Thursday it’s Munchies night. Basically this is an excuse to indulge; join us for pizza chips, a mega cheesy meatball sub and a peanut butter and jam ice cream sandwich. Pig Out!

Of course we’ll also be serving our regular dinner menu which is full of dirty burgers (and some lighter bites such as the Benny Benny Chicken which is a carb free zone and our Mackerel Nicoise). We’ve got the original BC Burger, a beef patty topped with home brined beef (#doublebeef) and smoked cheddar, then we’ve got the Sloppy Ben (topped with homemade chilli con carne) and the Big Benny Melt (topped with Mac & Cheese, yep Mac & Cheese).

Talking of big eats, have you tried the Chilli Cheese Dog yet? Two all beef dogs smothered in chilli con carne and melted cheese.

Don’t forget, we’re not just about food… we do a fine line in drinkies too. We’ve got a bunch of cocktails, some awesome gins (including some you’ve probably never tried), a pretty cool wine list which includes Greek and Lebanese wine (which are superb value for money and crucially taste great) and Meantime London Lager and Pale Ale on tap with Curious Brew and Sambrooks in the fridge. Good times.

Chilli Weekend at Ben’s Canteen

This weekend is a seriously exciting one because Will Yates is bringing his award winning chilli to Ben’s Canteen. From 5pm on Sunday night you can tuck into the best chilli you will probably ever have at our Chilli Night. The chilli takes 3 days to prepare and contains rare breed beef, pork and venison from Cornwall. It’s for one night only and when it’s gone, it’s gone. Click here for more details and here to book a table.

Of course all weekend we’ll be serving up brunch – Top Table reckon it’s one of the Top 5 most indulgent in London. To make for a great brunch, we recommend you try a Sipsmith Classic Bloody Mary - click here to learn how we make it.

And day and night you can tuck into one of our burgers, MSN Food reckon we’re one of the top burger places in the UK and ShortList concur whilst Scout Magazine have named the BC Burger as one of the Top 10 in London – meaty goodness.

This weekend at Ben’s Canteen

It’s another rugby weekend and in our part of London, that’s a very big deal. Build up for a massive game for England with brunch and Bloody Marys. We’ve teamed up with Sipsmith to bring you their take on a Classic Bloody Mary,

Bloody Mary

and Tiff, our superstar behind the bar, has also made a Brunch Thyme Mary (a Bloody Mary using lemon thyme and rosemary infused vodka) and a Bloody Good Kick (chilli and garlic infused vodka), which is quite an apt name for this weekend eh.

We’ve also recently added a Marmalade Martini, a range of Hot Chocolates (Mint, Chilli, Gingerbread or with Amaretto) and we’ve got all new smoothies; Strawberry Delight, Blueberry Bliss and Pineapple Surprise – we now only use a little yoghurt, making them even healthier – to set you up for a big weekend.

Also, this weekend,

  • We have a new dinner menu! It’s full of dirty burgers (e.g. the Big Benny Melt – a burger topped with mac and cheese) and hot dogs but we’ve also added in some lighter options such as the Benny Benny Chicken which is a chicken breast with salad and a mayo free slaw, and a Mackerel Nicoise to balance things out.
  • Dinner now starts early, join us from 5pm and on Fridays and Saturdays the kitchen is open until 11pm, meaning you can join us for late night bites.

  • And check out our new wine list, which includes some left field (but awesome) choices such as Portuguese, Croatian and Lebanese wine, alongside the more expected.
  • We’re proud to run SW London’s busiest (and we like to think), best brunch - join us every weekend from 9am-4pm. We don’t take bookings for weekend brunch but tables do become available quickly, grab a coffee and/or a bloody mary at the bar whilst you wait.
  • Make your weekend last longer by joining us for the Sunday Night Saver - all burgers and sandwiches for a flat tenner, that’ll help banish the Sunday night blues.
