Some things for the weekend

Whatever the weather this weekend we are here to make sure you are fed and watered with top notch British food, lovely wines (including English ones) and some cracking craft beers from small brewers such as The Kernel and local lads Sambrook’s.

Here’s what’s going down at the Canteen…

  • To celebrate our burger being named as one of the Top 10 in London we made a film of it being made - click here to watch. We serve it all day on Saturday and Sunday so you’ve got plenty of time to come and take it on.
  • Time and Leisure just nominated us as one of London’s best local restaurants, if you like us then would you be so terribly kind as to vote for us here?!
  • Also, Ben just got interviewed by our friends at Le Cool, click here to read the interview.
  • Our Sunday Roast is super tasty. We serve it from 2pm every Sunday. Enjoy Roast Orkney Beef, Pork Belly or Roasted Chicken with roasties, cauliflower cheese and broccoli, greens, root veg mash and yorkies.
  • To add to our British food, done well ethos and British beers we’ve added a selection of English wines (British wines means something else), including a cracking sparkling by Chapel Down. Come and run the rule over them this weekend and let us know what you think.
  • We recently introduced a Retro Lunch menu, served from 12pm to 4pm Mon-Fri. Our current favourite from the menu is the chicken in a basket – you can actually eat the basket! Don’t forget we also serve brunch every day, not just at the weekends.
  • If you haven’t experienced our All Day Breakfast Scotch Egg then you need to change that this weekend. Like the burger it’s served all day. It got 5 stars from the leading light on Scotch Eggs - it’s a serious orb.
  • In our opinion brunch should be accompanied by Bloody Mary’s, have you tried ours yet? We use Sipsmith Vodka, they’re based in Hammersmith and it’s lovely stuff.
  • On the subject of local booze, we make our cheesecake using Powerhouse Porter from local brewers Sambrook’s. It might sound a bit odd, making a cheesecake from beer, but blimey it tastes good.
  • Oh by the way, Monday is St George’s Day – to celebrate we’re doing a free pint offer, click here for deets.

Easter Weekend at the Canteen

Easter, it’s probably lost some of it’s meaning but one thing we do know that it stands for is an epic long weekend!

Easter at Ben's Canteen

We’re open all weekend and we’re going to make it super tasty.

Good Friday: We’re doing a full blown brunch service from 9am. Dinner as normal from 6pm.

Saturday: Will be service as normal, so brunch from 9am until 4pm and then dinner from 6pm.

Easter Sunday: Brunch from 9am and then Sunday Roasts from 2pm.

Easter Monday: We’re copying Sunday, so brunch from 9am (to soak up those ‘extra Saturday’ hangovers) and roasts from 2pm.

Our bar will be open every day for awesome Sipsmith Bloody Mary’s, craft beers and a cracking little wine list that now features a few English numbers including a lovely sparkling Primrose by Chapel Down.

This weekend at Ben’s Canteen

It has been a remarkably busy week at the Canteen and rather excitingly we’ve added a couple of new dishes to our Winter Menu, including our British Beef Board, which plenty of people have been tweeting about – now it’s all about the eating!

Here’s our Weekend To-Do List.

  1. Try our tribute to British Beef – the British Beef Board.
  2. Tuck into what is rapidly becoming the most famous Scotch Egg in London. A rather nice chap, who may have been made in chelsea, tried it today and seems to be a fan.
  3. Come and sample our Sunday Roast and get a free bottle of wine.
  4. Book your tickets for our Sophie Michell Celebrity Chef Pop Up event on Valentine’s.
  5. Come and join us for SW London’s busiest and best brunch – we recently added Kedgeree and Porridge with Chilli & Fig compote and we’ve started serving Sipsmith Bloody Mary’s which are ace.
  6. Put a date in the diary to come to our Sambrook’s Beer Dinner and to come down and have some whisky braised Orkney beef for Burns Night.
  7. Book a table and settle in for a damned good time whilst you enjoy British food, done well.

The 2012 Weekend

Here at the Canteen we’re getting rather excited about the bank holiday weekend. We’re doing brunch, roasts, drinks and dinner as we aim to help you party, meet with friends, entertain/escape the family and generally enjoy the end of the festive period.

2012

During the day on New Year’s Eve we’ll be getting you warmed up and raring to go for the evening’s celebrations with brunch from 9am until 4pm. Then we’ll be celebrating New Year’s Eve with a very special dinner for those who have booked in for it, for those just dropping in to line their stomachs before going out on a biggie we’ll be doing a slightly reduced dinner menu… the bar of course will be open all day and night.

On New Year’s Day we’re here to help you get 2012 started in style with the busiest and best brunch in South West London (if not beyond), we’re expecting to be serving up plenty of Bloody Mary’s and Bubbles as well as some kickstart coffee. Then from 2pm it’s the 2nd weekend of our Sunday Roasts, like our brunch we want them to be amazing and the first weekend we rolled them out we smashed it so we’re expecting big things again (we’re all very serious about our Sunday Roasts at the Canteen).

And then it’s Monday and it’s a Bank Holiday… which means we’re doing another full blown brunch service, good times!

Eat, Drink and Be Very Merry!

Christmas Eve at Ben’s Canteen

Ah Christmas Eve, we love it, there is a ‘end of term’ feeling, you’ve finished work and good times lie ahead (and the fact that your family are likely to drive you mad at some stage just adds to the end of school feeling).

Crimbo Eve is also an awesome time to catch up with mates and with that in mind we’re doing brunch, dinner and lots of drinks, including our Winter Pimms Punch.

Christmas Eve at Ben's Canteen

Brunch will be kicking off at 9am, so come in for a Big Ben (our mighty Full English), Eggs Benedict, our awesome BC Burger, that’s topped with homemade corned beef to make it extra British, and plenty more including Bloody Marys and, as it’s Christmas Eve, some fizz.

We’ll be serving our new winter menu with our recently launched beer matching options from 6pm until 8pm. The bar will be open all night and after 8pm we’ll have nibbles (such as pork pies) and a lovely winter Oxtail stew.

Plus @jimmyrhodes83 will be hosting, so you’re in for some serious Christmas cheer – he is definitely Captain Christmas in the Canteen.

DippityBits and Small Plates Tonight

At one stage today it looked like England were going to deny us giving away loads of free Bloody Marys but luckily they finally pulled themselves together and we had a lot of fun pouring out numerous free BMs.

We’re now having a little relaxed period whilst our friend Kate sets up her DippityBits tasting station (situated at the front of the Canteen tonight)… then we’ll be cranking up for a full dinner service and we expect that our new Small Plates menu will once again go down a storm.

DippityBits

At brunch our World Cup burger proved a massive hit (we even had to go and get another batch of amazing Smoked Montgomery Cheddar from the brilliant Hamish Johnston), so we recommend you try a couple of Small Plates and then tackle this beefy beauty (featuring 2 beef patties from Dove the Butcher).
