Chilli Weekend at Ben’s Canteen

This weekend is a seriously exciting one because Will Yates is bringing his award winning chilli to Ben’s Canteen. From 5pm on Sunday night you can tuck into the best chilli you will probably ever have at our Chilli Night. The chilli takes 3 days to prepare and contains rare breed beef, pork and venison from Cornwall. It’s for one night only and when it’s gone, it’s gone. Click here for more details and here to book a table.

Of course all weekend we’ll be serving up brunch – Top Table reckon it’s one of the Top 5 most indulgent in London. To make for a great brunch, we recommend you try a Sipsmith Classic Bloody Mary - click here to learn how we make it.

And day and night you can tuck into one of our burgers, MSN Food reckon we’re one of the top burger places in the UK and ShortList concur whilst Scout Magazine have named the BC Burger as one of the Top 10 in London – meaty goodness.

New Dinner Menu at Ben’s Canteen

If you’ve been into the Canteen, during the day, recently you may have spotted Ben tucking into plate after plate of food (not that unusual some might say!). He undertook this arduous task so that you guys could enjoy a brand new dinner menu and it launches tonight.

As it’s January and the economy is a stagnant beast we’ve worked hard to try and reduce the overall cost of dinner and we’ve also changed our 2 courses for £20 offer to 2 courses for £18 and a free glass of wine.

You can see the whole menu by clicking here, meanwhile here are some of our early favourites.

Small Plates

The Fish Tacos rock and the All Day Breakfast Scotch Egg remains totally epic.

Bigger Plates

The Benny Benny Chicken is for those of you looking to be a wee bit healthier, it’s carb free and our rainbow slaw isn’t made with mayo which is much nicer and kinder on the scales. On the flipside, the blue cheese hollandaise with our new flat iron steak (a super tasty cut of beef) is luxurious and a decadent treat.

Burgers & Sandwiches

The BC Burger (recently named as one of the UK’s top burgers by ShortList) is untouched (although we did recently improve it by switching bun, it’s way better) but we’ve added a couple of new, frankly dirty, burgers too. Come and check out the Sloppy Ben (basically we pour on chilli con carne and cheese) and the Big Benny Melt (the burger is topped with mac & cheese) and indulge in good filth – feel free to ask for additional napkins.

Big Benny Melt

Big Benny Melt

We’re super excited about the new Sea Dog (basically a posh fish finger sandwich loaded with mushy peas and homemade tartare sauce) and our All Beef Hot Dog is a winner, especially if you add chilli and cheese!

Salads

We’re loving the Mackerel Nicoise – great fish and a great salad.

Sharers & Sides

We’ve made our Mac & Cheese vegetarian friendly and we’ve introduced two new veggie sides in the form of Spicy Sweet Corn and Smokey Roasted Cauliflower (delish).

Desserts

Just before Christmas, Ben took a trip to Lille and Bruges and fell in love with Speculoos which is kinda like a ginger biscuit but a bit more cinnamony – this is good news as we now have a Speculoos Cheesecake on the menu and it’s lovely. For desserts we’ve sourced the best salted caramel ice cream we could find, it’s from our friends at Gelupo (the best ice cream place in town, go check it out on Archer Street in Soho).

ShortList Magazine’s Best Burger Search Hits Ben’s Canteen

We’ve always loved ShortList Magazine, when we had an office job we used to read it each week and longed for the day when we owned a restaurant that could be featured in Pints & Pistachios (as the pic below shows, this dream actually came true), and now we love them even more. Why? Well they’re conducting a search for the UK’s Best Burger and they only went and gave our BC Burger 4 beautiful stars! See below for the write up….

Pints & Pistachios, Ben's Canteen

“To paraphrase the eternally wise Frank Debin, this is the kind of burger that will make you want to drop to your knees and thank god you’re a man. That’s because each masculine-sized layer – a gargantuan (clearly genetically modified) tomato, richly delicious burger sauce, lettuce with an autumn leaf crunch, melted smoked cheddar, a handmade beef patty topped with a topside of Orkney beef that’s been slow cooked for 8hrs – wildly lived up to expectation on our visit, and, if not for a last minute crumble of the lightly toasted bun, it was close to perfection.”

Shortlist's Best Burger

And guys, we’ve changed our bun, so we reckon we’d now be in with a shout at 5 stars. Anyways, enough reading, book yourself in for dinner and come try the BC Burger for yourself.

Canteen Weekender

This week we had our first birthday and we’re super grateful to everybody who came down and celebrated with us. The year has flown by, thanks for coming along on the journey with us (and for enduring a few bumps along the way) and we hope you’ll keep hanging out with us – we’ve got loads of things planned. On that note, you need to come to our American Road Trip inspired dinner as part of the August Bank Holiday, details here.

Below is a little list of what’s going down over the weekend and coming up…

Remember we’re open for brunch and dinner from 9am till late all weekend.

  • Dinner on Saturday and Sunday starts at 6pm and if you book before 7pm you can claim 2 courses for £20 and a free glass of wine.
  • Also, we’ve just launched the Sunday Night Saver - get any of our burgers or sandwiches for a tenner.
  • When you pop in during the evening, you need to indulge in our dedicated chip menu - the chilli cheese chips are the staff favourite.
  • Happy Hour - join us for good times and cheaper drinkies from 5-7pm daily.
  • On the drinks front, we’re more than proud to have England’s oldest cider in the Canteen, find out more about it here.
  • We run SW London’s busiest and best brunch, starting at 9am each day.
  • Come and check out the new brunch menu, we’ve added French Toast, Huveos Rancheros and a Smoked Salmon Bagel amongst other things.
  • Reckon you’re a big eater? Try our Man v Food style challenge - can you smash back the All Day Breakfast Scotch Egg, the Big Ben and the BC Burger and chips in 20 minutes?!
  • Check out the Colporter pop-up - leave the Canteen with a full tum and some awesome pieces for your home – and Jo Butler Flowers who will be bringing fresh bunches for sale every Thursday.
  • Oh, you should also check out our new bar snack, beef jerky from Billy Franks. The cheeseburger flavour is awesome as is the BBQ and the Holy Fuck Sauce (from The Rib Man) flavour

Good times!

Road Trip Dinner at Ben's Canteen

New Dinner Menu

Here at Ben’s Canteen we’ve been thinking about our menu for quite some time. We’ve been pushing the British Food, Done Well theme and we’ve really enjoyed serving this food up.

However, over the last few months we’ve also been thinking about cities and what we like about them. Fun and diversity are the key elements. So, with this in mind we’ve rejigged our menu, loosened up on the British theme and cranked up the Canteen element (think comfort food but with really good produce – most of which is brilliant British stuff).

Now for those of you fretting, fear not, the All Day Breakfast Scotch Egg and BC Burger remain! To the starters we’ve added sliders (mini-cheeseburgers) and for the veggies who’ve had to cope with scotch egg jealously, we’ve added a veggie version which uses mushrooms instead of sausage meat. We’re also expecting the jerked chicken and popcorn prawns to be a real hit.

On the burger front, as we said the BC Burger remains and now it’s joined by some winners such as the French Dip (a beef sandwich where the bread is dipped in gravy, with melted cheese) which went down so well at the Independence Day Dinner, we couldn’t not have it. We’re also doing a pulled pork bap and a mushroom burger.

We’ve revamped the mains and have some homemade meatballs with cheesy cauliflower & squash mash which are awesome. We’ve got mussels with cider, leeks and shredded ham hock, carrot and coriander fritters, fish and chips with London Lager batter and a rib-eye steak with a portobello mushroom topping.

At the Canteen we all love chips, so we thought, what the hell, lets create a dedicated chip menu. So now, alongside hand cut chips you can also get Nicky’s chicken salt chips, chilli cheese chips, chips n’ gravy and sweet potato chips.

We’ve also got a whole bunch of new sharers including mac & cheese with bacon, deep fried pickles and Buffalo wings.

For those of you thinking about salads, we’ve got a Cobb salad, homemade fish cakes with a leaf salad and a seasonal number too.

And for those looking to finish with a treat, you need to check out our Potted Chocolate which involves chocolate mousse, crushed oreo’s and jelly worms.

Click here to check out the new dinner menu and here to book (the 2 courses for £20 and a glass of wine offer remains, however, the Sunday BBQ is no longer – Sunday brunch will run until 4pm and then dinner will kick in at 6pm).

We’re super excited and we’re sure it will mean even more good times at Ben’s Canteen – the place on the hill.

Sunny lunch in Battersea

The sun is shining and St John’s Hill looks great.

St John's Hill

With all this heat we’ve given our lunchtime menu a bit of a lighter touch. From 12pm to 4pm Monday to Friday you can now enjoy chargrilled herbed chicken with a choice of salads.

We’ve also added fishcakes, a spinach omelette, Ploughman’s and an old school classic in the shape of ham, egg & chips. And fear not, you can still get the mighty BC Burger and our famous All Day Breakfast Scotch Egg.

Vegetarians, we’ve been neglecting you on the sandwich front but now every lunchtime you can pop in for a lovely warm goats cheese, mushroom and caramelised onion toasted sarnie.

Don’t forget we also serve brunch everyday until 4pm, so come to us for your eggs (and try our new Poached Eggs with Asparagus) and maybe a cheeky Bloody Mary and at the very least a top notch Square Mile coffee.

Good times Battersea, good times.

Eating and Drinking in Clapham Junction, Battersea

Last week was the St John’s Hill Fabulous Feast, a week long celebration of food and drink. It reminded us that St John’s Hill is a seriously good spot for food and drink.

You’ve got The Plough, Powder Keg Diplomacy, The Birdhouse, The Fish Club, Adulis and more… all of which surely makes it a wee bit more interesting than Northcote Road and probably the most exciting street for bars and restaurants in Battersea, especially as it’s a stone’s throw from Clapham Junction?!

So, what do we here at Ben’s Canteen bring to the street?

Ben's Canteen, St John's Hill, Battersea

Well we see ourselves as an all rounder, we aim to serve you a top notch coffee with brekkie or brunch, something tasty for lunch, a treat for tea and a cracking dinner with drinks being served via our bar all day and night.

Chiefly, we see ourselves as an alternative to the pub. Don’t get us wrong, we love a boozer but we got a bit bored of tap after tap of beer (most of them generic continental lagers) and numerous big screens with Sky Sports News on loop but where do you go to escape that? Whilst keeping everything equally relaxed? That’s what we strive to be.

We want to be that place where you can drop in on your own or grab some friends and catch up over drinks and simple but super tasty food. We love the fact that Clapham Junction is just a short stroll from the Canteen as it means you should be able to persuade your friends who live that little bit further away to drop in and hang out with you.

To help become this place we serve breakfast, brunch, lunch and dinner every day. We serve British food, done well. We’re infamous for our All Day Breakfast Scotch Egg and the BC Burger has been named as one of the Top 10 in London.

Ben's Canteen Burger

Obviously to become your alternative to the pub we need plenty of booze, we’ve tried to make it interesting and a little different. So, we work with small independent brewers, such as local boys Sambrook’s. We’ve put together an interesting wine list that features some English wine, not least a sparkling one in the form of Primrose Hill by Chapel Down. We’ve put in a special Gin shelf which features gins from small London distillers such as Sipsmith, SW4 and Portobello Road.

Remember, that unlike a lot of new trendy hangouts, you can actually book a table at Ben’s Canteen - click here to reserve yours now.

Free pint on St George’s Day

St George’s Day is an odd one, it isn’t a bank holiday and for some it’s an excuse to be somewhat of a twit. However, it’s also a good excuse to go out and have fun and that is very much what we’re into.

St George's Day

With that in mind, if you book a table with us on Monday night and order a BC Burger (which as you can tell from the pic below is a very serious burger, indeed Scout London have named it as one of the Top 10 in London) then we will give you a free pint of lovely Meantime London Lager to go with it. The BC Burger is available from 12-4pm and then from 6pm until 10pm, click here to book.
