Weekend Booze & Bites

There are strong rumours kicking around that Spring is coming this weekend – lets hope they are true! Regardless though, there is good news, we’ve launched our new Spring Brunch. We’ve added smashed avocado on toast with a poached egg (and we seriously recommend adding spicy chorizo to this magic combo), mushrooms on toast with truffle oil and a fried egg and a pair of new salads. Hit up the Canteen this weekend, give them a whirl and let us know what you think by clicking here. Don’t forget if you Instagram them then you can score yourself a free Bloody Mary.

  • Get involved with our cocktails. A pre or post dinner Old Fashioned always sounds good to us whilst the girls at the Canteen love the Damson in Distress (Damson Vodka, Prosecco & Cranberry) and the Vanilla & Chilli Caprioska is a firm staff favourite.
  • Our range of dirty burgers are proving so popular that MSN Food recently named us as one of the Top 21 Burger places in the UK. We don’t just do burgers though, we’ve got some lighter bites such as a Mackerel Nicoise salad and the Benny Benny Chicken which is a carb free number.
  • Dinner now starts early, join us from 5pm and on Fridays and Saturdays the kitchen is open until 11pm, meaning you can join us for late night bites.
  • Book in for an early dinner, from 5-7pm and we’ll give you some  extra value in the shape of a free glass of wine and 2 courses for £18.
  • And check out our new wine list, which includes some left field (but awesome) choices such as Portuguese, Croatian and Lebanese wine, and a seriously top notch Greek wine (Hedgehog) which is like a Barolo, alongside the more expected.

Big eats at Ben’s Canteen

If you’ve got a hunger then come see us at the Canteen.

Tonight (Weds) it’s Ribs Night. We’ve got a whole rack of baby back ribs waiting for you – served with hand cut chips and slaw. We’re also doing some specials; nachos with pulled pork or chilli and a deep fried banana split with homemade peanut butter ice cream.

Then on Thursday it’s Munchies night. Basically this is an excuse to indulge; join us for pizza chips, a mega cheesy meatball sub and a peanut butter and jam ice cream sandwich. Pig Out!

Of course we’ll also be serving our regular dinner menu which is full of dirty burgers (and some lighter bites such as the Benny Benny Chicken which is a carb free zone and our Mackerel Nicoise). We’ve got the original BC Burger, a beef patty topped with home brined beef (#doublebeef) and smoked cheddar, then we’ve got the Sloppy Ben (topped with homemade chilli con carne) and the Big Benny Melt (topped with Mac & Cheese, yep Mac & Cheese).

Talking of big eats, have you tried the Chilli Cheese Dog yet? Two all beef dogs smothered in chilli con carne and melted cheese.

Don’t forget, we’re not just about food… we do a fine line in drinkies too. We’ve got a bunch of cocktails, some awesome gins (including some you’ve probably never tried), a pretty cool wine list which includes Greek and Lebanese wine (which are superb value for money and crucially taste great) and Meantime London Lager and Pale Ale on tap with Curious Brew and Sambrooks in the fridge. Good times.

Spring Brunch at Ben’s Canteen

We’ve had a few new brunch dishes in the pipeline for a while now; we were waiting for the weather to get a wee bit better before we launched them but, like you, we’ve had enough! Hopefully some new brunch dishes will nudge Spring along. If not, at least we’ve got some tasty new eats for ya.

So welcome to the brunch party,

  • Smashed Avocado on Toast with a Poached Egg (and we seriously recommend you add spicy chorizo)
  • Mushrooms on Toast with a Fried Egg & Truffle Oil
  • Super Food Salad
  • Pickled Beets with Rocket, Feta, Lentils & Horseradish Mayo
  • French Toast with Poached Rhubarb and Vanilla Ice Cream

We’ve also remixed our sweet corn fritters and given them  a new topping in the shape of an avocado & mango salsa. Now we do have some potentially bad news, our epic scotch egg is no longer available at brunch but you can still get it in the evenings, so it’s not all bad and we’ve added some new drinks to brunch; an Aperol Spritz and a killer Hair of the Dog to get you back in the game.

Easter at Ben’s Canteen

We know that a LOT of people tend to head out of London for Easter but for those of you staying we have good news – Ben’s Canteen will be open throughout and we’re bringing in some of the Rib Man’s Christ on a Bike hot sauce to make it a memorable one.

Our rocking weekend brunch will be in full swing on both Good Friday and Easter Monday and of course on Saturday and Sunday, from 9am to 4pm. Come and indulge in one of London’s Top Brunches (according to the lovely people at Top Table). And then from 5pm, join us for dirty burgers (MSN recently named us as one of the Top 21 Burger Places in the UK) and lighter bites.

Chilli Weekend at Ben’s Canteen

This weekend is a seriously exciting one because Will Yates is bringing his award winning chilli to Ben’s Canteen. From 5pm on Sunday night you can tuck into the best chilli you will probably ever have at our Chilli Night. The chilli takes 3 days to prepare and contains rare breed beef, pork and venison from Cornwall. It’s for one night only and when it’s gone, it’s gone. Little Bird Gin at Ben’s Canteen

If you’ve been into the Canteen recently and gazed at our gin shelf then you may have noticed a bottle called Little Bird. It’s top notch stuff and you’ll probably spot Ben sipping on it as it’s currently his favourite gin.

Chances are you probably don’t know a lot about Little Bird, so here’s the lowdown,

In 2011, 50 gin enthusiasts, drinks industry professionals and friends assembled in Peckham Rye, London, to blind taste 50 different bottles of gin and score each one on nose and taste.

Clear choices for more citrussy flavours and much lighter juniper tastes came out and team Little Bird started to develop a recipe to appeal to a more modern palate.

After a year of testing, trialing and sampling, the final recipe for Little Bird Gin was born and the first batch of just 1,122 bottles was made to the exact recipe. Since then, knowledge and delight in Little Bird Gin spreads through word of mouth.

  • Aromas: Grapefruit and orange, juniper and ginger spice.

Agh it’s only gone and got cold again! Luckily we’ve got a whole bunch of events to warm you up.

This Week

  • Tuesday: 2-4-1 Cocktails. Arguably dangerous on a school night but fun. We’re loving the Vanilla & Chilli Caprioska at the moment.
  • Wednesday: Ribs Night. A big rack of ribs with slaw and beans plus a couple of other specials like deep fried banana split and peanut butter ice cream – sensational!
  • Thursday: Apres Ski Party. Ben’s Canteen is becoming Ben’s Chalet for night only.
  • Sunday: St Patrick’s Day: Bring your own Guinness and tuck into our Beef & Guinness Pie and Irish Stew as well as our regular dinner menu.
  • Every night: 2 course for £18 and a free glass of wine.

Recently Top Table recognised our brunch as one of the Top 5 most indulgent in London and a few days later we learnt that MSN Food rate us as one of the Top 21 Burger Places in the country - boom!

Start the weekend indulgence with; eggs benedict (royale or florentine), some top notch Allpress coffee, a Bloody Mary (click here to watch a video of it being made) or Ben’s favourite brunch time tipple – a Marmalade Martini – and the papers.
